About Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara National Park is a remarkable protected area located in northern Tanzania, nestled between the Arusha and Manyara Regions. It spans across a sprawling landscape that stretches from the shores of Lake Manyara to the towering escarpments of the Great Rift Valley.

Covering an area of approximately 325 square kilometers (125 square miles), Lake Manyara National Park offers a diverse range of habitats, including lush groundwater forests, open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and the shimmering lake itself. This variety of ecosystems supports an extraordinary array of wildlife, making it a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts and safari-goers.

The park is renowned for its impressive biodiversity, and it is home to a rich abundance of wildlife species. Visitors to Lake Manyara National Park have the opportunity to spot iconic African animals such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and various antelope species. The park also hosts a significant population of tree-climbing lions, which is a unique behavior rarely observed elsewhere.

One of the park’s major attractions is Lake Manyara, a shallow alkaline lake that provides a sanctuary for numerous bird species. Over 350 bird species have been recorded in the park, including flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons, and a wide variety of other waterbirds. The sight of flocks of colorful birds wading through the shallows of the lake is truly a sight to behold.
